Mariners march into finals after F3 Derby fightback

Central Coast Mariners Women came from a goal down in the second-half to take all three points from the F3 Derby, in the final round of the 2024/25 Ninja A-League regular season.

The Mariners were dominant but were unable to find the breakthrough and fell behind against the run of play, but eventually turned the game around, scoring in the 77th and 83rd minutes, with our 27th and 30th shots of the game.

Tiana Fuller once again made an impact off the bench, scoring her sixth of the season to equalise, before Jade Pennock netted the winner.

The win puts the Mariners fourth, which would give us a home Elimination Final, but our final standing will be confirmed on Sunday after Western United take on Wellington Phoenix.

First Half

The Mariners dominated in the first half, with our best opportunities coming on 14 minutes as a crazy sequence saw us hit the woodwork three times in two minutes. Peta Trimis first hitting the bar before the following scramble somehow didn’t result in a goal…

On 21 minutes, Annalise Rasmussen’s well-struck free-kick flew just over before Brooke Nunn forced a flying save from Jets keeper Danielle Krzyzaniak minutes later.

Krzyzaniak made another fine save on 37 minutes, acrobatically tipping over Annabel Martin’s cross-shot that looked to be dipping into the goal.

Second half

The Mariners started brightly again in the second half with chances in the first five minutes for Rasmussen and Trimis but both efforts were fired over.

Newcastle took the lead against the run of play on 56 minutes, Deven Jackson striking into the bottom corner from the edge of the box.

The Mariners responded well, continuing to dominate but it just wasn’t happening in front of goal. Fuller had an opportunity with her first touch after coming on on the hour mark but her shot flew over the bar.

There was another big double chance on 61 minutes, Pennock linking up well with Gomez before being denied first by Krzyzaniak then by a defender on the line.

The Jets goal was getting peppered but would survive a little longer, with Krzyzaniak saving once again from Pennock after a delightful pass from Gomez to create the chance, before Nunn drilled an effort just wide from inside the box.

Finally the Mariners found a way through and not for the first time this season it was our 16-year-old super-sub Fuller who found the back of the net after a scramble in the box.

The turnaround was completed just six minutes later as Pennock finally got her goal, burying a chance from inside the box to make it 2-1.

In added time, Fuller flashed another chance across goal, before the Jets broke and almost equalised but Libby Copus-Brown couldn’t hit the target.
