Central Coast Mariners FC is proud to announce that defender Diesel Herrington has been named in Tony Popovic’s CommBank Socceroos squad for the November internationals against Qatar and Jordan.
The 22-year-old centre-back has played every minute of the Mariners’ opening three A-League Men matches this season. His performance in Sunday’s 1–1 draw with Melbourne Victory at AAMI Park drew high praise from Mariners Head Coach John Hutchinson. “For me, he’s the number one centre back in this league, comfortably,” Hutchinson said after the match.
“Diesel has earned this opportunity.,” Central Coast Mariners Sporting Director Matt Simon said.
“We see how hard he works every day. For everyone at the club who’s been part of his journey, it’s a proud moment to see him get the call to represent Australia.”
The selection is a proud moment for the Herrington family. Diesel’s younger brother Lucas, also a centre-back, has already represented the Socceroos, played at this year’s FIFA World Cup before joining Premier League side Hull City.
Both Herrington brothers will now be part of the 25-man squad. Diesel is one of three first-time call-ups to the Socceroos, including Thomas Waddingham (Portsmouth) and Sam Klein (St Pauli). They won’t be the only siblings, joining Tete Yengi (Machida Zelvia) and Kusini Yengi (Sanfrecce Hiroshima).
Herrington headed off to link up with the national team following the Mariners game against Sydney FC on Friday, November 6, at Allianz Stadium.
Australia face Qatar in Doha on Saturday 14 November and Jordan in Amman on Wednesday 18 November.
He is expected back on the Coast in time for the Mariners’ next match, against Perth Glory at Polytec Stadium on Saturday 21 November at 5pm.
Everyone at the Mariners congratulates Diesel on his selection and wishes him well in camp.
