Josh Nisbet – Our Next Socceroo: Midfield star given late call up

Central Coast Mariners star Josh Nisbet has been called up to the Socceroos following the withdrawal of Lewis Miller due to injury.

The call-up sees him link-up with fellow A-League players Adam Taggart, Bruno Fornaroli and Brandon Borello, whilst also reuniting with Central Coast Mariners Championship-winning teammate Sammy Silvera.

This is the first senior international call-up of Nisbet’s career, a fitting reward for what has been a sensational individual season so far.

The 24-year-old tops the Isuzu UTE A-League assists chart with seven, and has scored in back-to-back league games this month with strikes against Newcastle Jets and Macarthur.

Nisbet had initially missed out on the squad when announced by Socceroo boss and former Mariners Manager Graham Arnold, on Friday, but he did comment on Nisbet’s form this season and gave reasoning behind him initially missing out.

“The kid is doing fantastic.” Arnold said, before going on to explain that his thought process behind this squad selection was that due to the squad only having one training session together, he preferred to pick players who were already familiar.

Arnold hinted at Nisbet receiving a future call-up, which has now come even sooner than expected.

From becoming an A-League Champion last season, Nisbet has continued to grow as the Mariners are enjoying another exceptional season and the midfielder has been the focal point of Mark Jackson’s success with the squad.

Nisbet is one of only three outfield players in the Isuzu UTE A-League to have not missed a minute of action this season, alongside Wellington centre-back partnership Finn Surman and Scott Wootton.

As well as that, Nisbet has played all but 28 minutes of our historic AFC Cup run, as we now approach the Inter-Zonal Final against FK Abdish-Ata Kant after confirming our progression on Thursday evening in India.

Nizzy will be hoping for an International debut as the Socceroos take on Lebanon at Commbank Stadium on Thursday 21st March. You can get your tickets below.
