Danny Vukovic: “We have a lot of improvement left in us”

Central Coast Mariners stopper Danny Vukovic joined Football Manager Mark Jackson on AFC Cup press duty this week, ahead of our Inter-Zonal Semi-Final second leg with Odisha FC.

With a clean sheet on Sunday as the Mariners beat Macarthur 3-0 in the Isuzu UTE A-League, Vukovic took his already glowing legacy as one of the League’s best ever, to new levels – becoming the first goalkeeper in A-League history to make 100 clean sheets.

An incredible achievement, testament to his reliability, consistency and dedication.

In the first leg against Odisha last Thursday, our captain went relatively untroubled as the Mariners dominated the game to take a 4-0 lead to India, but the experienced goalkeeper insists the team will approach the second leg like any other game, with the intent to win.

“It’s another big game and the score in Australia doesn’t matter. We approach it like any other game and we understand it’s going to be a difficult game against a good side. We’re expecting a tough match but like every game, we go out to win and don’t change our approach.”

“There are certain things in the game that we want to execute that we know if we do well, it gives us a good chance of winning the game,” Vukovic added.

“For us it’s always about winning, We are not thinking of the previous result. We know it’s going to be a tough game and we think Odisha are going to be stronger playing at home so it won’t be easy but we are looking forward to the challenge.”

We have had very good form in the last two months with only one loss, so our mentality is strong. We’ve been playing a lot of football and we love playing, we’ve been improving every game and still feel like we have a lot of improvement left in us, so there is a huge drive within the team.

“It’s going to be a difficult game but one we feel if we do the things we know we can do then we can get some joy out of,” he added.
