Mariners Academy: Mixed results across the board

NPLW Team Round 1

It was a mixed bag of results for the Mariners Academy teams across the Easter weekend as the Boys continued their season and the Girls got theirs underway in round one.

The first grade men took on NWS Spirit in a top of the table clash but fell behind from the penalty spot just 13 minutes in.

Zenden Hart was called into action on occasion to keep the margin at one as the Mariners pushed for an equaliser, and the effort continued into the second half as Jing Reece came close on a couple of occasions.

With just over 25 minutes to go though Spirit doubled their advantage, and it turned into a double blow as four minutes later they grabbed their third to seal the victory.

The boys will take on Blacktown Spartans tonight in their rescheduled round three clash that was washed out.

Dan Barrett and the NPL2 Women began their season away to Northbridge Bulls, but were caught off guard early as the hosts raced out to a 2-0 lead after 20 minutes.

They fought back strongly though, and pulled a goal back as Gabrielle Blanch set up Kiera Bainsfair to cut the lead in half at the break.

An evenly matched second half saw drama at the end, as Norhtbridge scored in the 87th followed by Iona Snape grabbing a goal in the 90th minute, only for Northbridge to pull away again with a stoppage time penalty.

The team is straight back into action this weekend when they take on Sutherland Shire away from home on Sunday.
