Hyundai A-League | Mariners Matchday 14 Preview

The Brisbane Roar will visit Central Coast Stadium on Saturday afternoon, bringing with them a 16-match undefeated streak against the Mariners that Alen Stajcic will be looking forward to snapping.

The Mariners winless run against Brisbane in the league stretches back to April 2014, but having knocked off the hoodoo of 18 matches without a win against the Victory just two weeks ago, Stajcic’s men are in the mood to turn things around.

A 3-0 loss to Western United was a tough outing with a three goal deficit accrued inside the opening 20 minutes and the squad are desperate to atone from that this weekend.

“Everyone, staff and players understand that both the performance and the result wasn’t good enough [last weekend],” Josh Nisbet said at media on Friday.

“We need to improve, and that’s what we’re going to do this weekend.”

“We will redeem ourselves and hopefully get the three points because it’s crucial.”

Stajcic’s men bucked the trend against the Roar when they saw them off on penalties in the FFA Cup back in August, but a 2-0 defeat at Suncorp Stadium in rough eight of the league was a frustrating result after the victory over Western United a week prior.

Sam Silvera returns this weekend for the Mariners, with Ruon Tongyik and Josh Nisbet joining him, as well as Dylan Ruiz-Diaz who signed a scholarship deal with the club earlier in the week.

Silvera provides another attacking outlet for the side, while Nisbet, who has not featured since the win over Western United is a strong option in midfield and Tongyik and Ruiz-Diaz add further depth for Stajcic to pick his gameday squad from.

The Roar haven’t lost in their last four matches, and Stajcic conceded that they will be a tough opponent on Saturday.

“The Roar have improved over the last month, they’ve shown a  lot more resilience, some better structures and Brad Inman in particular has hit a good patch of form,” Stajcic said.

“They’re in a patch now where they haven’t lost for a month or so, it’s a team in good form, and they’re just on the verge of the six.”

“Again for me, I know if we play our best football we can compete with and beat them, but it’s certainly going to be a tough game.”
