The Central Coast Mariners are delighted to announce 17-year-old defender Callum McCaskey has signed a scholarship deal with the club, continuing a journey with the club that began when he was just eight years old.
A genuine product of the Central Coast football pathway, McCaskey began his junior football with Terrigal United before joining the Mariners at Under 9 level. He has progressed through the club’s development system ever since, making his scholarship signing a proud moment for Callum, his family and the Mariners Academy.
A left-footed centre back, McCaskey has continued to impress as he has progressed through the age groups, showing composure in possession, confidence playing out from the back and the ability to read the game well beyond his years.
The latest milestone in McCaskey’s Mariners journey was his first team debut against Sydney United 58 in the Australia Cup Round of 32.
For Sporting Director Matt Simon, this is another example of exactly what the Mariners pathway is designed to achieve.
“Callum is a great story for our club because he has genuinely grown up in the Mariners system,” Simon said.
“He came into the club at Under 9s and has worked his way through the pathway. For a 17-year-old to have already spent such a significant part of his life wearing a Mariners shirt makes this a really special moment.
“He is a naturally left-footed centre back, he is composed on the ball and has continued to develop physically and tactically. Most importantly, he is willing to learn and understands that this is only the beginning.
“We have always believed that young players from this region should be able to see a genuine pathway from their local junior club, through our Academy and into senior football. Callum is another example of that pathway working.”
For McCaskey, signing represents the next chapter of a Mariners journey that has shaped much of his childhood.
“I’ve been at the Mariners since Under 9s, so this club has been such a big part of my life growing up,” McCaskey said.
“To sign at 17 is a really proud moment for me and my family. I’ve grown up watching Mariners players come through the Academy and get their opportunity, so to now be taking another step along that same pathway is pretty special.
“I’m really grateful to all of the coaches who have helped me along the way, as well as everyone at Terrigal United where my football journey started.
“I know there is still so much work ahead of me. I want to keep learning, keep improving and take every opportunity I get. To be able to do that at the club I’ve been part of since I was a kid makes it even better.”
McCaskey’s progression once again show the Mariners’ long-standing commitment to identifying, developing and providing opportunities for talented young footballers, starting with those who have grown up playing the game on the Central Coast.
