Central Coast Mariners captain Alex Wilkinson is confident his team can take all three points when it travels to Queensland tomorrow for the Week 7 Hyundai A-League clash against Gold Coast United on Sunday, after two wins at home.
“We have won two in a row at home against both of the Melbourne teams and both teams were fancied to be up at the top of the table so that gives us a bit of confidence,” said Wilkinson.
“Gold Coast is coming off a good win in Perth as well, so it is going to be a fairly tough game. They have some good players but we are confident and going up there to get three points.”
The 26-year-old believes that the experience of new Mariners boss Graham Arnold has had a positive effect on the squad this season.
“Arnie has come in and brought a lot of new players into the squad, it has really freshened up the squad and I think it has been great.
“He has a lot of experience under some fantastic coaches and managers. We are just looking forward to working with him for the rest of the year,” Wilkinson said.
The veteran defender believes that the team has made an impressive start to the campaign after picking up eleven points in its three wins, two draws and one loss.
“We have had a very positive start to the season. We have only lost one game so far, we have won two and drawn one at home, and it has been very impressive. We are a new team with new players so it will take us a while to gel. As long as we keep improving and remain consistent each week, we will be alright.”
Wilkinson has played an instrumental role in the Mariners success so far this season and he hopes that form will continue as the club aims to launch an assault on a fourth finals campaign in six years.
“I just want to stay fit and healthy and hopefully remain in the starting eleven as does every other player at the club, we want to be playing week in week out,” said Wilkinson.
