Hot on the heels of announcing Michael McGlinchey-s arrival on the Coast, the Mariners can now confirm the signing of exciting young Sheffield United academy product Nicky Travis to a 1-year deal.
“The Mariners are delighted to have finally reached this outcome,” said Mariners Executive Chairman Lyall Gorman.
“Nicky is a fantastic young player and will bring a lot of experience with him, following his apprenticeship with our sister club Sheffield United.
“He has been developed at one of England-s top clubs and I-m sure he will be a welcome addition to our squad for the Hyundai A-League 2009/10 season and beyond.
“His signing also proves how beneficial our link with Sheffield United is, and my thanks go to their chairman Kevin McCabe for the way he-s handled negotiations at his end,” said Gorman.
While Travis didn-t experience first team action during his time at Bramall Lane, the 22 year old has proven his worth against the top clubs in England at reserve level, scoring in clashes with both Manchester United and Newcastle United.
The 22 year old spent a brief spell on loan at League One club Chesterfield, making two substitute appearances at Saltergate before suffering knee and ankle injuries, and returned to the Blades in October 2007.
At 183 centimetres tall, Travis has been used as a striker, midfielder and a defender during his time at the Sheffield United academy, meaning he is sure to give Mariners football manager Lawrie McKinna plenty of options.
“I-ve always said I-m continuing to look at ways to boost the squad, and I think Nicky can bring something different here,” said Mariners football manager Lawrie McKinna.
Travis spent five weeks on trial with the yellow and navy during the Asian Champions League campaign, and after a protracted Visa application, is now eligible to take his place in the Mariners squad.
“He-s trialled well, and now we-ve been able to finally get his Visa sorted, he-ll be among those in contention for a place in the squad to head to Melbourne,” McKinna said.
Travis- official unveiling brings to four the number of signings made this pre-season, with McGlinchey, Chris Doig and Matthew Lewis also joining the charge in Hyundai A-League version five.
Travis will join the rest of his teammates at the Central Coast Mariners annual family fun day at Bluetongue Stadium this Sunday, 2 August. Gates open at 11am.
