Socceroos defender Ruon Tongyik has signed a one year contract extension with the Central Coast Mariners for the 2021/22 A-League campaign.
The 24-year-old had a career best season in 20/21, named in the PFA’s A-League Team of the Season as well as forming a formidable partnership with fellow youngster Kye Rowles in the core of our defence.
Tongyik who recently made his Socceroos debut in Kuwait as part of the World Cup Qualifying process will be looking to match his form in 2021/22.
With Rowles re-signed for two years also, the heart of the Mariners backline will be back next season, and Tongyik said he can’t wait for the new campaign to come around.
“I am very happy to be back at the Mariners for another year. This is such a great community club and I love being a part of that community and playing my football here.”

“I am looking forward to building on what we had last season and I am even more excited to work under Nick [Montgomery] after seeing what he did at NPL level” Tongyik said.
Having gained valuable experience under Graham Arnold in Kuwait, Head of Football Ken Schembri welcomed Tongyik’s commitment to the club.
“We are all really pleased that Ruon has extended his stay at our club and by confirming Ruon for another season we have been successful in retaining the core group of players that were pivotal to our on-field success last season.”
“He had a great campaign with us last season and his consistent performances were rewarded with a call up to represent his country – which was not only an amazingly proud moment for Ruon and his family, but for all of us at the club too” Schembri said.
Tongyik will join up with the squad immediately during pre-season ahead of the A-League season returning on the 30th of October.
