The Central Coast Mariners have confirmed the first of several pre-season fixtures ahead of the 2016/17 Hyundai A-League season, with the yellow and navy set to head across the Tasman to take on Wellington Phoenix in the ‘Battle of Trafalgar II’ in Nelson on Saturday 24 September 2016.
September’s trip to New Zealand will be part of a larger series of events in the Trafalgar area as the Mariners take on Ernie Merrick’s men in what is potentially the side’s last hit-out before the start of the new Hyundai A-League season in early October.
“The Central Coast Mariners are very excited to be travelling to Nelson New Zealand to take on Wellington Phoenix as part of our pre-season schedule.” said Central Coast Mariners CEO Shaun Mielekamp.
“The growth of Football in New Zealand and Australia is something that both the Phoenix and the Mariners have in common and this is another example of how we can work in collaboration to bring A-League football to a wider audience.”
Phoenix General Manager David Dome said “The Phoenix are excited to be playing in Nelson. With a rich and proud history of football, Nelson deservedly enjoys a reputation as a real hot bed of football in this country. We are really looking forward to taking the team to Nelson and showing the locals what professional football looks like and if the local community gets in and supports the match, we may very well look at coming back”.
