TOUGH defensive midfielder Nick Montgomery will catch up with long time friend and Central Coast Mariners Director Kevin McCabe at Bluetongue Stadium tomorrow night.

McCabe, who is Chairman of Sheffield United and was instrumental in facilitating Montgomery-s move to the Mariners, will attend Saturday-s much-anticipated showdown between the Yellow and Navy and Sydney-s Sky Blues.

“I don-t think he-s coming to watch me specifically,” Montgomery said. “I-m sure he-ll enjoy watching Del Piero but it will be nice to catch up with him. I had a great relationship with him over my 14 years at Sheffield United, we had some great times there so it will be nice to catch up.”

Montgomery played against some of the biggest names in world football during his time with the Blades in the Barclays Premier League, but said playing against Alessandro Del Piero would be something he could tell his kids about in the future.

“I-ve been fortunate to play in the Premier League against some of the best players in the world so hopefully if I do play on Saturday Del Piero will be another one that I can tell the kids about,” he said.

“He-s a legend not only in club football but world football. I-m sure Sydney will benefit from his world class abilities and obviously as a group of lads you look forward to playing against players of his calibre.”

Montgomery said the Mariners would take confidence from there last start win against Melbourne Heart into the match.

“It was a good result for us in Melbourne on Sunday picking up three points which we needed. It takes us nicely into the game against Sydney.”

“It was no frills. We are not going to sit here and say it was the best game in the world and that we created a lot of chances, because we didn-t. But I think we limited a good team who have a good home record to very few chances.”

“I never felt like we were going to lose the game,” he said.

On the prospect of playing in front of a big Bluetongue Stadium crowd, Montgomery said: “I-ve only played one home game and the fans we brilliant. If we can get 15,000 there I am sure it will be rocking!”
