Central Coast Mariners left-back Lucas Maraugis spoke to the media ahead of our Round Two clash with Adelaide United.
The 23-year-old is already becoming something of a fan’s favourite on the Central Coast after scoring a stunning goal against Buriram United at Our Paradise and since putting in strong performances against Melbourne Victory and Shanghai Port.
Echoing Mark Jackson’s positivity after a determined display in Shanghai on Tuesday, Lucas said:
“It was a well-fought battle and a positive performance. I thought the boys did really well, it wasn’t the result we wanted in the end but the way we played, the chances we created and the way we fought until the end, there are some really positive points to take.”
“It sums up the character of this club, conceding early isn’t what we wanted but we held our heads high and fought until the end against a very challenging opponent so it was an admirable team effort.”
Speaking after defeat in Shanghai, Jacko hailed Lucas as a standout performer on the night, praising his physical capabilities and influence in both defence and attack. Lucas says he is pleased with his performances so far but believes there is more to come as he develops connections with the players around him.
“I’ve learned so much [from the coaching staff] already. I’ve only been here a couple of months but I feel like I’ve been here for a long time and learned so much already, I can’t wait for more opportunities to come.” Mauragis said.
“I am [happy with performances so far], it’s always challenging playing with new players and building that connection but this group of players make it easy, they are really welcoming. It’s not perfect just yet but it’s getting there and it’s already at a good level.”
Lucas says the boys were ‘buzzing’ to get into training and are confident heading into the game at Coopers on Saturday.
“The travel isn’t easy but the boys are all raring to go in Adelaide, we were buzzing to get into training today and we’re excited for the game,” he said.
Adelaide will be challenging it’s their first game of the season but we feel like we’re on a bit of a roll and we’re confident that we’re going to take three points home. I think it will be a really good game.
“It’s always a challenge when we don’t have our home supporters there but we will stick together as a team and fight to take those three points home. That’s our mindset.” Mauragis added.
