Match Preview: Central Coast Mariners vs Newcastle Jets

After almost a month without A-League Men’s football, the Mariners are back to take on the Newcastle Jets in a crucial F3 Derby. With the announcement of the F3 Derby trophy, an important three points and bragging rights up for grabs, the Mariners are keen to restart the season with a bang.

Team News

Following a successful World Cup with the Socceroos, Garang Kuol, Danny Vukovic and Jason Cummings are all in the Mariners 20 man squad selected by head coach Nick Montgomery on Thursday.

The only squad change from our round six clash against Macarthur is Cameron Windust coming in for the suspended Brian Kaltak, who will again be eligible for selection against Sydney FC in round eight.

Recent Form

The Mariners have been one of the most exciting teams in the A-League Men’s this season, playing some eye-catching football during our final three matches before the World Cup break.

A comeback win against Western United, a sensational performance against Western Sydney and an unfortunate last minute loss to Macarthur rounded out those matches, currently leaving us in fifth on the ladder.

After starting the season with two victories, the Jets finished the first portion of the competition with three consecutive losses. This included their final match, a 2-1 home loss against a 10-man Melbourne City outfit.

Newcastle currently sits in tenth place, with six points after five games.

Previous meetings

The Mariners and Jets have faced off 56 times in the Isuzu UTE A-League, with the Mariners winning 20 of those games including all three last season.

This was the first time in Mariners history that the side completed the clean sweep, with the Jets winning just two of our last ten matches.

The Mariners have won 12 of the 28 matches to take place at Industree Group Stadium, while the Jets have come away with seven.

The last match to take place at Our Paradise between us saw the Mariners come away with a 2-0 victory in front of almost 12,000 fans.

The F3 Derby Trophy

The Central Coast Mariners and Newcastle Jets have agreed to symbolize the F3 Derby with a trophy to represent the rivalry.

A core drill sample of the M1 Motorway, formerly known as the F3, was used to create this unique trophy which brings to life the rivalry of the F3 Derby.

The Central Coast Mariners are the current holders of the F3 Derby trophy after completing the clubs first ever 3-0 sweep of the Jets last season, with the bragging rights awarded annually to whoever wins the best of three matches.

In the event that there is an equal split of points in a season, the trophy will be retained by the current holders.
