Round 7 saw Southern Branch FC visit Pluim Park hot off a strong win the week before.

Mariners’ First Grade coach Mark Yule’s pre game instruction was for his players to back themselves, believe in their talent, work as a team and the results would come.

A pensive opening ensued with both sides uncertain of their opposition and the early stages were a clear period of cautiously edging into the game.

Yule had moved Gabbi Blanch to number 9 and she started to make inroads with her speed and turn.

The 35th minute saw Mariners’ captain Oriana Keane fire off a shot which was spilled by the Southern Branch keeper and Jade-Anne Kroemer followed in brilliantly to tap the goal past the keeper. The put the Mariners ahead 1-0, and that is how the teams went into half time.

While the Mariners led on the scoreboard, the game was a tight affair. Yule’s half time message was to continue to work hard and in transition attack with pace.

At the back Katie Oliveira and Letisha Waddell were impressive and made the transitions from defence to attack possible.

From broken play Georgia Davis backed herself and in the 62nd minute fired a curling shot which shaved the post, giving the Southern Branch keeper no chance.

The Mariners now led 2 nil and were showing dominance in field position and structured plays. Coach Yule injected Kate Duffy and Grace Bryant into the game to ensure the tempo stayed high.

The move proved successful as Bryant saw an opportunity with the Southern Branch keeper off her line, lobbing a high chip which beat the keeper in the 87th minute to seal the 3-0 result.

A dominant and slick performance by a confident Mariners outfit and a win that was witnessed by our #1 CCM supporter Jake Banks which made it all that more special for the Academy girls.

Next week sees the Mariners Women travel to Peel Park taking on Gladesville Ravens.
