Mariners suffer narrow defeat to Adelaide

Central Coast Mariners fell to a 1-0 defeat to Adelaide United, in a close encounter at Woy Woy Oval.

The Mariners fell behind early on and despite applying pressure on the Adelaide goal until the very end, couldn’t force an equaliser.

🔢 Line-Up

Emily Husband made just one change to the starting eleven as Shadeene Evans started in place of Peta Trimis who dropped to the bench, joined by new recruit Greta Kraszula who made the squad for the first time.

Starting XI: Langman, Nash, Martin, Pennock, Galic (C), Ray, Rasmussen, Rowe, Nunn, Evans.

Substitutions:
63′ ON: Fuller, Trimis OFF: Rasmussen, Nunn
77′ ON: Kraszula, Puxty OFF: Quilligan, Evans

Unused Subs: Carmichael (GK)

First Half

Annalise Rasmussen had the game’s first shot less than a minute in, but it was the visitors who opened the scoring early on, Emily Hodgson getting in at the back post for a simple finish on eight minutes.

It was a positive response from the Mariners, who were denied an equaliser on 12 minutes as Claudia Jenkins pulled off a fantastic save to deny Brooke Nunn’s effort which destined for the top corner.

Jenkins also made strong saves to deny Shadeene Evans and Taylor Ray as the Mariners pushed for an equaliser before half time, before Sarah Langman made an excellent stop to deny Fiona Worts one-on-one.

Second half

Again the Mariners had the better chances in the second half, Nunn was denied a first Mariners goal again after testing Jenkins from range.

Sarah Rowe also came close to her first Mariners goal on just her third appearance, cutting inside after advancing forward from right back, but Jenkins got down well to save her low, left footed strike.

The biggest chance for the Mariners came on 73 minutes, some fantastic play from substitute Peta Trimis saw her deliver a cross to the back post, Annabel Martin ran onto the ball but couldn’t keep her header down from close range.

Tiana Fuller also came off the bench and posed a thread to Adelaide, on 84 minutes the Reds’ defence were forced into some desperate defending as Fuller saw two shots from inside the box blocked.

There would be a controversial end to the game as Fuller rounded Jenkins outside the box and would have been left with an open goal to equalise, if not for a clumsy foul from the Reds’ keeper.

Jenkins got away with just a yellow, much to the displeasure of the packed out crowd at Woy Woy Oval, with Fuller unable to convert the resulting free-kick with the last chance of the match.
