Mariners sign Christian Theoharous from Western United

The Central Coast Mariners are pleased to announce the signing of Christian Theoharous from Western United, joining the yellow and navy until the end of the season with an option to extend.

An extremely skilful attacker who can split defences with his footwork and composure, the youngster has experience not only in Australia but also overseas.

Theoharous made his A-League debut for Melbourne Victory as an 18-year-old, playing a significant role in their 2017/18 season that ended with a championship, only missing the final due to injury. He also featured six times for the club in the Asian Champions League.

His clear talent caught the eye of Bundesliga giants Borussia Monchengladbach, with the winger signing for the club. He spent three seasons with Borussia Monchengladbach II, before moving back to Australia for the 2021/22 season during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He signed a two-year scholarship contract for Western United, playing four times in the A-league during his stay at the club.

The Mariners have fought off interest from other teams around the A-League competition to secure Theoharous’ signature, with the youngster deciding that the Mariners project is the one for him. The attacker is the perfect age to join the Mariners young core as he looks to take his footballing career to the next level.

The winger has also had experience in the Australian junior set up, playing five times for the national under 20’s side.

His raw talent and international experience will complement the Mariners already firing front line well, with the Central Coast currently leading the way in goals scored in the Isuzu UTE A-League Men’s competition so far this season. The youngster is also versatile, having the capability to play as a wing back as well as in the final third.

Theoharous is excited to be joining the Mariners, eager to hit the ground running as we approach the mid-point of the season.

“Looking at where the club is today, the opportunities that they give young players and just from having a chat with Monty, the Mariners feels like the perfect fit,” he said.

“The way they play and the style that they play I believe suits me perfectly, it was a no brainer really. I can’t wait to get the football underway and show everyone what I can do.”

Mariners head coach Nick Montgomery is pleased to have secured the signature of the youngster, knowing the talent that he possesses.

“We are extremely excited to bring a player of his talent to the Mariners. It is clear he has massive potential and we believe that together, if we can unlock it, he can be a future Socceroo,” Montgomery said.

“After speaking to him I believe he will fit into the group perfectly, creating further competition for places.”
