Mariners and Perth share points after stalemate

Central Coast Mariners were held to another goalless draw at home by Perth Glory.

The stalemate makes it three draws in a row for the Mariners at the start of the Isuzu UTE A-League season.

The Mariners controlled the game from start to finish but were unable to find the finishing touch, with the major moment coming in the second half as the Mariners were awarded a penalty but saw it overturned.

Line-Up

Sasha Kuzevski started for the first time in the Isuzu UTE A-League, whilst Nathan Paull also came into the starting eleven after a solid second half performance off the bench against Adelaide last weekend.

Starting XI: Peraic-Cullen (GK), Kaltak (C), McCalmont, Kuol, Doka, Mauragis, Steele, Tapp, Kuzevski, Paull, Brandtman.

Substitutions:
37′ ON: Herrington OFF: Tapp
57′ ON: Feijao, Edmondson OFF: Brandtman, Kuol
81′ ON: Ngor, Eames OFF: Kuzevski, Steele

Unused subs: Pavlesic (GK), Roux.

First Half

The Mariners controlled the first half but were unable to find the breakthrough. Possibly the best chance of the game came after just three minutes.

Alfie McCalmont danced past a couple of challenges on the left, his cross reached Kuzevski at the back post but the youngster saw his effort saved by Oliver Sail.

Paull also had a chance in the first half but couldn’t connect after arriving at the back-post from Alou Kuol’s flick on.

Second half

Kuzevski was lively on his first start, he created another chance early in the second half but nobody was in the middle as his cross flashed across the face of goal.

Mikael Doka saw a low shot blocked on the hour mark, before he was involved in the main talking point of the game on 75 minutes.

The Brazilian crossed for Ryan Edmondson who was prepared for a tap-in before the ball struck the arm of Glory defender Luis Canga. The referee Nathan Shakespear pointed to the spot but overturned his decision after a VAR check, stating that Canga’s arm was ‘in a natural position’.

The Mariners continued to dominate possession and pushed until the end but were left frustrated, unable to find a winner. Edmondson firing over before Mauragis saw a long-range effort held by Sail in added time.
