Mariners Academy: Women clean sweep UNSW

The Mariners Academy Women celebrate a goal against Nepean

The Mariners Academy enjoyed a strong weekend of results this past round, with a clean sweep of UNSW FC in the NPL Women’s grades, and only two losses on the Men’s side.

After being down 3-0 at half time to St. George FC, Nick Montgomery’s first grade Men’s side came roaring back into the contest to tie the game at 3-3, but conceded a late goal in stoppage time to fall to a 4-3 defeat, while the U/20’s prevailed 2-1 thanks to goals from Zac Barbatano and Gideon Arok.

For the Women’s side, they got back to winning ways after two consecutive losses, topping off an excellent day in all grades with a 2-1 win over UNSW FC.

Emily Diaz opened the scoring three minutes in as the Mariners got off to a hot start and Annalise Rasmussen doubled the lead in the 10th minute to have her side leading 2-0 at half-time.

Uni struck back late to create a nervy final 10 minutes but the team held them out for a win and Head Coach Dan Barrett spoke highly of the first half performance and stressed the importance of eking out a win.

“I was happy with how we started the game,” he said.0

“We clearly deserved the half time lead of 2-0. The second half performance was far from satisfactory with UNSW taking control though so there is still a lot to work on moving forward.”

“The points are extremely important. To be honest we have only had one poor performance [against Nepean], the other matches we were victims of our own demise at times but to be honest not being able to keep a consistent line up due to injuries have hampered us.”
