The Central Coast Mariners’ Westfield W-League side scored a second victory of the new season last Sunday to send the yellow and navy into a five-way tie at the top of the competition ladder.
The Mariners welcomed back Westfield Young Matildas starlets Karina Roweth, Teresa Polias and Kyah Simon for their 2-1 triumph over Canberra United at McKellar Park, after each were successful in helping Australia qualify for the AFC Under-19 Women-s Championships in 2009.
Simon was instrumental in Canberra, scoring two second-half goals to secure what looked an unlikely win in the nation’s capital, particularly after the Mariners played almost the entire second half with only ten players following the sending off of goalkeeper Lisa Hartley.
Next, the Mariners face fellow competition pace setters the Queensland Roar in Round 4 this Saturday in a match that provides the youthful Mariners outfit with a telling chance to make a statement in the Westfield W-League.
“I am really happy with the way the team is performing, especially the way that they have stuck to a game plan over the past couple of weeks,” said Mariners Westfield W-League Head Coach Stephen Roche.
“Against Queensland we face a difficult test against a more experienced side though we will be up to the challenge I-m sure.”
Roche was very satisfied with the return of his Westfield Young Matildas representatives, paying homage to their ability to back up for a match following a hectic playing schedule with the national team.
“The girls did really well with the matches they played with the Westfield Young Matildas, along with the travel involved also and I-m very impressed with their efforts,” said Roche.
The Mariners- Westfield W-League campaign continues against the Queensland Roar at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday, 15 November. Kick off is at 6pm.
