Hyundai A-League | Mariners Matchday 2 Preview

Match Week 8 | Phoenix v Mariners Preview

It’s here. It’s #F3Derby time. Newcastle will visit Central Coast Stadium on Saturday evening, looking to take victory in their first game of the season, while the Mariners will be out to rebound from a loss that felt undeserved against the Western Sydney Wanderers last Saturday.

It’s the 48th edition of the historic clash, and the honours have been evenly split since the Hyundai A-League began. 15 Central Coast Mariners wins, 16 Jets wins and 16 draws with 47 goals scored each, and the only way it gets closer is with a Mariners win this weekend.

Alen Stajcic named his squad on Thursday with Matt Simon returning to the fold after a suspension, while Ruon Tongyik was also named for a potential return from an injury that has kept him out of action since the Mariners were in Tasmania for their pre-season trip.

The Jets have some big names out for the #F3Derby, with Ben Kantarovski injured with a pulled hamstring. Lewis Italiano will also miss the derby, after receiving a red card in the FFA Cup and the Jets will also be without their marquee striker, Wes Hoolahan, along with Kaine Sheppard, who have sustained injuries ahead of the derby.

At Thursday’s media call, Stajcic and Ziggy Gordon indicated that the focus is not on the past and  and spoke about how important the #F3Derby is for the people of the Central Coast and Newcastle.

“That’s a long time ago now, we have a new squad and for Newcastle it’s their first game of the new season,” Staj remarked when asked about the 3-2 win in his first game in charge.

“That’s a bit of history, now all we can do now is look forward to this weekend’s game and try and build into this season.”

“I’ve been told it’s intense, it’s ruthless, and there’s a good fanbase from both teams,” Gordon said.

“They show themselves and I think it means a lot to the coast and that’s what the gaffers been telling us, we’re not just playing for ourselves or family, we’re playing for the coast and for all the members that come out and watch us play.”
