Highly-rated defender Shumba Mutokoyi signs Mariners scholarship

Central Coast Mariners are delighted to announce that 17-year-old defender Shumba Mutokoyi has signed a scholarship contract with the club ahead of the Isuzu UTE A-League 2026/27 season.

The highly rated young defender has spent the past four years in the Mariners Academy and is a lifelong Mariners supporter – a fantastic example of the pathway the club is committed to creating for young players across the country, and especially on the Central Coast.

A naturally athletic and powerful defender, Shumba has consistently played above his age group during his time at the Mariners. Last season, he made 20 appearances in the NPL NSW Men’s competition while also being named on the bench for six Isuzu UTE A-League matches, although he is yet to make his professional debut.

Complementing his athleticism, Shumba is calm and composed in possession, giving him the versatility to play in midfield as well as his preferred centre-back position.

After signing his scholarship contract, Shumba said he is honoured to continue his journey with the club he has always supported.

“I am really happy and grateful to sign a scholarship with the Mariners,” Mutokoyi said.

“This is the club I grew up supporting, so to be able to play my football here is truly an honour.

“The culture here is brilliant. It’s a family club and a great place to develop as a young player, learning from the senior players and staff while being given opportunities to play and develop.

“Pre-season has been a lot of hard work so far, but really exciting for everyone – to be working with a new Head Coach.

“Personally, I want to play as many minutes as I can and continue to develop my game. As a team, we want to win as much as we can and make our fans proud.”

Sporting Director Matt Simon said Mutokoyi’s scholarship was another example of the club’s commitment to developing local talent.

“Shumba is exactly the type of player we want to see progressing through our pathway,” Simon said.

“He’s been part of our Academy for several years, understands what it means to represent the Mariners, and has earned this opportunity through his hard work, attitude and consistent development.

“At just 17, he’s already shown he’s capable of competing against older players, and we believe he has all the attributes to develop into an excellent professional. Providing opportunities to talented young players from our Academy is central to our football strategy, and we’re excited to see Shumba continue his journey in a Mariners shirt.”
