Foxtel Y-League | Mariners Matchday 2 Preview

Nick Montgomery’s Foxtel Y-League side will return to action on Saturday as they make their home debut for the season.

A 3-1 win against Canberra United last weekend got them off to the best possible start but they will face a tough test here against Sydney FC, who Montgomery described earlier this week as a likely favourite for the competition.

“It’s a massive game for us,” Montgomery said ahead of the Saturday meeting.”

“They’re a rival of ours and a team that is always there or thereabouts in this competition and with a squad who played NPL1 last season it will be a big test for our boys.”

Mikey Katsoulis, Harry McCarthy and Kyle Johnson netted in the win in Canberra last weekend, the Mariners longest road trip of the competition, and Montgomery said it is important they improve on that performance and carry through momentum from the win.

“We were a bit wasteful last week, and could have finished a few more chances we created,” he said.

“Against Sydney we certainly can’t afford to get off to a slow start and we need to take our chances, so I’m looking forward to seeing the boys coming out of the blocks strong.”

“It would be great to see a strong crowd down there at Pluim to support the team in their first home outing.”

A healthy, full squad looks likely and the match may also provide a chance for members of the Hyundai A-League squad to get in some game time.

Gates at Pluim Park will open at 9:30am, and entry to the match is free.
