Favourite #F3Derby Moments: What’s yours?

Arguably the most well-known derby in the league, the #F3Derby is the original derby meeting of the Hyundai A-League. Across the years, the #F3Derby is split almost evenly across 47 games with 15 Mariners wins, 16 Jets wins and 16 draws with 57 goals scored by each club in the historic clashes. Ahead of Saturday’s 48th #F3Derby, let’s take a look at some of our favourite moments against the Jets.

  • Kennedy’s double penalty save against Roy O’Donovan (16/03/19)
  • A moment that most Mariners fans would remember from last season. The former Newcastle Jet, Ben Kennedy, made two key penalty kick saves to win the game for the Mariners after Roy O’Donovan went down in the box in injury time. The Referee ordered a retake as Daniel Georgievski was inside the box when the penalty kick was taken, only for Kennedy to come up trumps once more in Staj’s first game in charge.

  • Mitch Duke’s 92nd minute goal to win (11/10/19)
  • In front of over ten thousand fans in Gosford, Mitch Duke’s injury time goal will live long in the memory of many. In the second minute of injury time, the Mariners finally broke the nil all deadlock from a free kick into the box. The Jets also found the back of the net in this game, but it was ruled offside by the officials.

  • Major Semi Final comeback (10/02/08)
  • In the 2007/08 season, both teams were in their prime, making for great #F3Derbies. After a strong season from both teams, the Mariners met their rivals in the major semi-final. A 2-0 loss in the first leg meant the Mariners were up against it, but they bounced back in the second leg, with two goals to Sasho Petrovski and one goal to Adam Kwasnik sending the Mariners into the Grand Final.

  • Monty hands the Jets the spoon (9/4/17)
  • In the penultimate round of the 16-17 season, the Mariners welcomed the Jets to Central Coast Stadium, with both sides near the bottom of the table. And Monty got us underway perfectly just after the half hour mark as his drive from outside the box laid the foundations for a strong win that condemned our rivals from the North to the spoon in that season. Fabio Ferreira netted in the 51st minute to seal the victory.

  • Perez rubs salt into the wounds
  • When the #F3Derby arrived in round 27 of the 2010-11 season the Jets had already been ruled out of the finals, but that would do nothing to numb the pain of a late derby loss as Patricio Perez latched onto Josh Rose’s cross in the dying moments to net the winner and give the Mariners plenty of momentum heading into the finals series.
