Diesel Herrington signs two-year contract extension

Central Coast Mariners are today delighted to confirm the first of many upcoming player announcements, following our ownership takeover this week, as Diesel Herrington has signed a two-year contract extension with the club.

The upcoming 2026/27 campaign will be the 21-year-old defender’s third season on the Coast, after joining the club in July 2024 from Danish side Aarhus Gymnastikforening.

Herrington has made 21 appearances for the Mariners so far, gaining experience in both the Isuzu UTE A-League, as well as the AFC Champions League Elite in his first season on the Coast.

Diesel’s natural athleticism and imposing stature – at over 190cm tall – coupled with his composure and ability on the ball, make him an extremely promising prospect and someone we are excited to have staying at the Mariners.

After agreeing his new deal, Herrington says he is happy to be staying on the Coast, and believes his best football is still ahead of him.

“I’m really happy to be staying with the Mariners,” he said.

“Over the last two years I’ve built strong relationships with the staff, players, and supporters. It’s a club with great history, culture and ambition, and I’m looking forward to continuing to be a part of the journey.

“I have already enjoyed some good moments the last two seasons, and I truly believe my best football is now ahead of me.”

As we begin to prepare for the 2026/27 campaign, which will start in the coming weeks with our Hahn Australia Cup 2026 Round of 32 clash against Sydney United (fixture details TBC), Herrington has outlined his goals both for the team and individually for the season ahead:

“Collectively, for the 2026/27 season, we want to be back competing at the highest level, challenging for trophies, and most importantly, making our supporters proud.” Herrington said.

“Individually, I want to continue improving every aspect of my game, contribute as much as possible to the team’s success, and help drive the standards within the squad every day.

“I’m looking forward to getting started and seeing what we can achieve together.”

Sporting Director Matt Simon added his thoughts on our first player announcement of the 2026/27 season.

“Diesel is a player we have always believed has a very high ceiling, since first identifying him and bringing him to the club.”

“He possesses excellent physical attributes and is comfortable on the ball, making him a very promising defender in the modern game.

“At 21-years-old, he is still developing and shows a desire to improve every day. We believe he has all the qualities to become an important player for the Mariners.

“As we continue to build our squad for the 2026/27 season and beyond, retaining talented young players like Diesel is a key part of our strategy.

“We are delighted that he has committed his future to the club and we are excited to see the next stage of his development in a Mariners shirt.”
