The F3 Derby is considered one of the most ardent rivalries in the Hyundai A-League and with ten days until our season starts we are looking forward to round 10 where we will face off against the Newcastle Jets once again.
In round 10 the Central Coast Mariners will make the trek north up the F3 to take on the Jets at Hunter Stadium and there is no better day than today for us to look back on the history of the derby.
Let-s reminisce about one of the Mariners greatest triumphs over our local rivals, the 2007/08 Major Semi-Final second leg played at Bluetongue Stadium.
10 February 2008 – Major Semi Final, 2nd leg
The Newcastle Jets arrived at Bluetongue Stadium high on confidence holding a 2-0 lead after the first leg played in Newcastle.
But Lawrie McKinna-s team, urged on by a partisan crowd clad head-to-toe in yellow fought like lions to earn a direct passage to the Hyundai A-League decider.
Adam Kwasnik opened the scoring for McKinna-s men in the 32nd minute, cutting inside his marker before his deflected shot nestled in the back of the net.
In the 73rd minute, Sasho Petrovski restored parity to the tie with an opportunistic effort.
Into extra time Petrovski struck again, slamming a fine shot past Ante Covic to ensure the Mariners would advance direct to the Hyundai A-League-s showpiece.
It was a day few Mariners fans will forget anytime soon, in a cauldron-like atmosphere we hope to replicate at Gosford-s idyllic bayside arena many times this season.
Other interesting F3 Derby Facts
