The Central Coast Mariners are pleased to announce the signing of New Zealand international James McGarry, with the versatile defender putting pen to paper on a deal until the end of this season.
The deal comes as the Mariners and Newcastle Jets agreed to a swap deal before the transfer window closed at midnight last night, with the Jets signing Thomas Aquilina in return.
A natural left back with international experience, the defender developed his skills in the Wellington Phoenix academy. After playing a few games for the New Zealand side, McGarry traded New Zealand for Holland. The defender signed for Eredivisie Willem II, gaining valuable experience playing in Europe.
Following the conclusion of his contract, McGarry returned to the Phoenix, playing 38 times across two campaigns. He was a key part of the side making finals football last season.
McGarry then signed on for the Newcastle Jets. He has played 10 games for the Hunter side, scoring once in a 3-1 win over his former team in round three.
The versatile defender has played for every New Zealand junior national team. McGarry has also made his international debut for the All-Whites, playing his first match for the side in a 2019 friendly against Lithuania.
Central Coast Mariners head coach Nick Montgomery is pleased to have secured the services of the experienced defender, while thanking Aquilina for his time at the club and wishing him well.
“James is a player that I have liked for a long time, and I think he will give us a great balance in the squad. He has a brilliant left foot and is extremely versatile, having the ability to play as a fullback, winger or in the midfield,” Montgomery said.
“James has played overseas and has played international football which I think will add even more experience to our young squad.”
