BIG-MOMENT KEEPER: MARINERS SIGN NIGERIAN U20 INTERNATIONAL RUFAI ABUBAKAR

The Central Coast Mariners are pleased to announce the signing of highly rated Nigerian goalkeeper Rufai Abubakar, with the 18-year-old joining the club for the next chapter of his young career.

Abubakar arrives on the Central Coast having already represented his country at youth international level, earning selection for Nigeria’s U20 Flying Eagles.

Despite his young age, the goalkeeper has already experienced the pressure of international tournament football.

Abubakar was part of Nigeria’s squad at the 2025 Africa U20 Cup of Nations in Egypt and produced a memorable contribution in the third-place playoff against the host nation.

Introduced late in the match specifically ahead of the penalty shootout, Abubakar delivered when called upon, saving two penalties as Nigeria defeated Egypt to claim the bronze medal.

It was a moment that showcased more than his shot-stopping ability, demonstrating the composure and confidence required to perform when the pressure is at its highest.

Abubakar has developed his football with Nigerian club Mavlon FC and now heads to Australia to continue his progression in the Mariners environment.

Central Coast Mariners Sporting Director Matt Simon said Abubakar’s physical attributes immediately stand out, but it was his mentality that made him an exciting prospect for the club.

“Rufai obviously has an incredible physical presence for a goalkeeper, but you need much more than size to succeed in that position.

“What we really like is his mentality. Goalkeepers have to be comfortable with pressure, they have to make decisions and they need the confidence to stand up in big moments.

“To be brought into an international tournament match at his age, knowing you’re there for a penalty shootout, and then make two saves tells you something about the character of the player.

“He is still only 18 and there is plenty of development ahead of him, which is what makes this opportunity exciting.

“We believe we have a strong environment for developing young players and we’re looking forward to working with Rufai and helping him take the next steps in his career.”

For Abubakar, the move to the Central Coast represents another major challenge after already representing Nigeria on the international stage.

Abubakar said he was ready to embrace the opportunity.

“I am very happy and proud to be joining the Central Coast Mariners.

“Coming to Australia is a big opportunity for me and I am coming here with the mentality to work hard every day and keep improving.

“As a goalkeeper, you always have things you can learn. I want to work with the coaches, compete every day in training and learn from the other goalkeepers and players around me.

“Representing Nigeria has taught me a lot about pressure and responsibility, and I want to bring that same mentality with me to the Mariners.

“This is a new country, a new club and a new challenge for me. I am excited to get started and show the Mariners supporters who I am.”

Abubakar will now settle into life on the Central Coast and begin working with the Mariners ahead of the 2026/27 season.

Welcome to the Mariners, Rufai.
