Nick Montgomery’s NPL2 first grade side fell to just their first loss of the season on Sunday with a 3-2 defeat at the hands of St. George at the Mariners Centre of Excellence.
Damian Tsekenis gave the Mariners a lead as he held off a defender after being sent through on goal, but St. George equalised on the 20 minute mark as the ball was swept home from a cutback.
The Mariners were reduced to ten men though with five minutes left in the second half though when Louis Khoury was shown a straight red card and the visitors took full advantage to take the lead from a corner in first half stoppage time.
10 minutes into the second half the Mariners put a penalty wide that would have brought them level and they were punished ten minutes later from another corner to make St. George’s lead two goals.
There was a glimmer of hope in stoppage time as Dan Hall fired home from inside a crowded 18-yard box but it was not to be as St. George took the three points.

Dan Barrett and his NPLW first grade side slumped to a third consecutive defeat as North Shore Mariners scored in either half to move themselves on top of the ladder.
Barrett described the display as good and full of effort but said it was not strong enough to overcome one of the form sides of the competition as his side continue to battle through their toughest section of the season.
“We took on a side boosting W-League experience, and that told particularly with Trudy Burke as she made some vital saves to keep us scoreless,” Barrett said.
“We have a big run in now sitting in third, and if we play the way we have played the last fortnight we will be absolutely in the mix come the end of the season.”
Injuries continue to be a concern for the first grade coach though, with Barrett awaiting news on both Brooke Miller and Indiana Auddino ahead of this weekend’s clash with St. George.
