Nick Montgomery and his Central Coast Mariners youth team continued their undefeated start to the Foxtel Y-League season on Sunday, thumping the Western Sydney Wanderers by five goals at Marconi Stadium.

Alou Kuol continued his excellent form with two-first half goals to take his tally to four in three matches after joining the Mariners, and Montgomery’s squad took that two-goal advantage into half-time.

After conceding early last weekend to Sydney FC in open play, Monty said it was pleasing to see how the side came out of the blocks on Sunday.

“The boys responded really well in training this week after a game we could have won, and I think that showed in the performance,” he said.

Dylan Ruiz-Diaz netted the third early in the second half, rolling off his defender as he received a pass before firing low into the bottom corner to seal the victory and goals from Harry McCarthy and Mikey Katsoulis rounded off the victory as the Mariners ran riot.

Montgomery was pleased with the result, but admitted the side were still maybe missing a clinical edge with some chances going astray.

“Certainly we were pleased with the result, but we missed some clear cut chances on the day,” he said.

“It was a 90 minute performance in which we largely dominated, so it was great to be rewarded with a strong win and now we can turn our focus to the derby against Newcastle this weekend.”

“It’s a big game for us and a chance to finish the first half of the season undefeated, and it would be great to see Mariners fans come out and support the boys who they might become familiar with in coming years.”

“The impact of all these performances is that we now have really strong competition for places, which makes team selection tough every week but it’s a great problem to have with a very talented squad.”

The Mini #F3Derby will kick-off at 10:30am on Saturday morning at Pluim Park, and entry to the game is free.
