Derby despair for Mariners women

The Central Coast Mariners- Westfield W-League side yesterday suffered a 2-0 loss to southern rivals Sydney FC at Campbelltown Stadium despite producing a largely impressive showing against their highly fancied counterparts.

First half goals from Leena Khamis and Lisa Gilbert secured the points for Sydney, though the visiting Mariners were not without their chances and were perhaps good value for at least a share of the spoils.

Indeed, the Mariners were assertive throughout and showcased glimpses of the potential their young side has to offer, only to concede a pair of match winners from set pieces.

Midfielder Teresa Polias was in good form for the visitors – her vision and enterprise a cornerstone of many of the Mariners- attacking advances, while Westfield Matildas Renee Rollason and Kyah Simon each threatened with consistency throughout.

“We played another great match, though did not get the points which is really frustrating,” said Mariners Westfield W-League Head Coach Stephen Roche after the match.

“I believe tonight-s performance was one of our best of the season, we really dominated possession and we kept them stuck in their own half for such a large spell – the two goals we conceded though were really disappointing.”

The Mariners- Westfield W-League campaign continues with a second derby in as many weeks against northern rivals the Newcastle Jets at Campbelltown Stadium on Saturday, 29 November. Kick off is at 6pm.
