SUPER-SUB Daniel McBreen spoke of his superb winner against Perth Glory on Monday morning, saying a momentary meeting of the eyes between he and dominant defender Trent Sainsbury is what led to the important goal.

SUPER-SUB Daniel McBreen spoke of his superb winner against Perth Glory on Monday morning, saying a momentary meeting of the eyes between he and dominant defender Trent Sainsbury is what led to the important goal.
With the score locked at 0-0 and the window of opportunity for either team to break the deadlock closing, McBreen delicately controlled an accurate Sainsbury pass in the 70th minute before firing past Perth custodian Danny Vukovic.
“It-s always good to get a goal especially against a team that I played for before but the most important thing was the three points for the team and we-re quite happy with that,” McBreen said.
“We just made eye contact and I made the run and he put it on a plate for me. It was a great ball from ‘Sains- (Sainsbury).”
“It was just there for me to bring down and put in the net, so it was a good ball from him and it came off well.”
Although naturally delighted to net his first goal of the campaign just seven minutes into his first appearance of the season, McBreen was reluctant to take the credit for the Bluetongue Stadium success.
Instead, the former Falkirk and Universitatea Craiova marksman spoke of the importance Graham Arnold places on team unity, and said he is only too happy to play any role requested by the former Qantas Socceroos mentor.
“It-s all about the team and ‘Arnie- (Arnold) is big on the team, it-s not about the individual,” he said. “If he wants me to come off the bench again then that-s what I-ll have to do.”
“As a footballer you want to start as many games as possible, so if he asks me to start I will be ready to go, but if he doesn-t then so be it.”
McBreen represented Newcastle United in the National Soccer League before he began his time in Europe as a professional footballer.
With the Mariners heading north this coming Saturday for a round 3 test against rivals Newcastle Jets, the goal-getter said he expected plenty of banter coming his away at Hunter Stadium.
“I know I-ll get stick from the crowd, that-s a given,” he said. “They-ve always got good crowds up there and being the F3 Derby it-s very vocal and there is a lot of rivalry.”
“We know it-s going to be a hard game but we-re up for it, as they will be,” McBreen concluded.
