Mariners take four goal lead into Odisha second leg

Another clinical second half display in the AFC Cup saw Central Coast Mariners run out 4-0 winners against Odisha FC.

It was Brazilian brilliance that saw the Mariners through in the last round against Isuzu UTE A-League rivals Macarthur in the last round, and more of the same was on display on another magical night at Our Paradise.

There was two goals and an assist for Mikael Doka as he continued his fine run of form, and another AFC Cup goal for Brazilian teammate Ronald Barcellos, plus the pick of the goals from Storm Roux, as the Mariners took a huge step towards the Inter-Zonal final by taking a four-goal advantage into the second leg a week today.

Mark Jackson named an unchanged starting eleven from the team that were 1-0 winners away in the F3 Derby on Sunday, and he had a strong bench at his disposal which paid dividends in the second half.

It was a bright start from the Mariners and they had a string of early chances, Jing Reec was put through on goal in the 2nd minute but Amrinder Singh made a fine save.

Angel Torres then had two chances in quick succession, firing narrowly wide before blasting over after good work from Josh Nisbet down the left.

On 12 minutes, Storm Roux crashed an effort off the crossbar after a flowing Mariners move from right to left, that started with Doka and ended with Jacob Farrell almost providing an assist for his opposite full-back.

The Mariners made the breakthrough and it was Doka who continued his fine form, calmly converting from just inside the box after more great football down the left and yet another assist from Nisbet.

Jackson turned to his bench at half time, bringing on Ryan Edmondson for Reec, and he soon made an impact, assisting Roux with a lovely touch round the corner and our right-back applied the finishing touch with a finish that any striker would be proud of.

Doka claimed his second of the night on 76 minutes with a delightful penalty after Farrell was taken down in the box by Roy Krishna.

The free-flowing football was in full swing and Edmondson almost fired home a fourth after a lovely pass from Dan Hall but his effort fizzed narrowly wide.

Another Mariners sub then came off the bench to add further damage to the scoreline, Ronald Barcellos entering the game in the 81st minute and striking in the 90th to make it 4-0 after being set up by Brazilian compatriot Doka.

A healthy scoreline for the Mariners to take to India in a week’s time, but first our attention turns to another huge Isuzu UTE A-League game on Sunday. It’s second vs third in the A-League as we take on Macarthur at Campbelltown.
