With the 2025/26 Ninja A-League season creeping ever closer, as we kick-off against Adelaide United in a huge Double Header at Our Paradise on November 2nd, it’s time to take a closer look at one of our most exciting players, Izzy Gomez.
Since joining the Mariners ahead of our return season in 2023/24, Izzy has established herself as one of the Ninja A-League’s best young players, with her all-action performances bringing energy, tenacity, goals and assists.
The 2024/25 season was a rollercoaster for Gomez, but it ended on the ultimate high.

After a strong start to the season, with the Mariners unbeaten and Gomez at the heartbeat, she earned her first call-up to the Matildas.
However, a cruel injury denied her of the opportunity and ruled her out for over three months.
Izzy had to be patient but put in an immense amount of work to return stronger though, she ended the season with seven goals and three assists, taking the league by storm as the Mariners charged into finals football for the second consecutive season – and there she would announce herself as a true big game player.
With our two-legged semi-final clash against Melbourne City deadlocked at 2-2, heading to penalties, she stepped up in typical Gomez fashion. A lung-busting run clear of the City defence before lofting the ball over the goalkeeper to send the Mariners to our first ever Grand Final.
The following week in Melbourne, she did it again, scoring on the big stage to put the Mariners ahead and scoring her penalty, despite a nerve-racking slip, as the Mariners made history with our first ever A-League Women’s Championship.
Gomez was named Grand Final POTM and the accolades wouldn’t stop there, she also claimed the Shark Fans Player of the Year for the A-League Women and was named in the PFA Team of the Season.
Finally, the most fitting ending to a fairytale season, Gomez was called-up to the Matidas where she would make her long-awaited debut against Argentina in Canberra.

We can’t wait to see her in Yellow and Navy again this season, and new Mariners Women’s Head Coach Kory Babington is looking forward to working with a player of Gomez’s quality again.
“I have been fortunate to have worked with Izzy in previous environments and I am looking forward to working with her again at the Mariners.” Babington said.
“She was a consistent performer in the Mariners’ 2024/25 Championship-winning squad and deserved her Matilda’s debut.
“Knowing her personality, work ethic and qualities – I believe she is a player capable of dictating a game and being the player who can make the difference in big games, as she demonstrated last season.
“She is a tenacious defender, she attacks space well with the ball, makes great forward runs, provides killer passes and scores key goals.
“Izzy is a player who has fans on the edge of their seats and we are looking forward to seeing her out there in Yellow and Navy again in the 2025/26 Ninja A-League.”
