Mariners fight back but lose touch on top 6


Central Coast Mariners were determined to make the most of home advantage in the push for top six.

Central Coast Mariners were in seventh place on 27 points through 21 matches. Central Coast lost their last Isuzu UTE A-League match 4-1 at AAMI Park against Melbourne Victory, snapping an eight-match unbeaten streak.

The opening 5-minutes saw the visitors start the brighter of the two. The Glory control the ball early on and create the games first chance which Redmayne deals with ease. 

The first chance for the Mariners goes begging in the 10th minute when Ngor fails to hit the target after getting the better of the Perth defender.

Goal for the Glory. Perth is rewarded for nice build up play down the right hand side, when Jaiden Kucharski whips a ball into the box for an unmarked Despotovski to head home in the 14th minute. Central coast will be disappointed with their defending. 

Perth Glory have their second in 3 minutes. A corner initially cleared by Central Coast is picked up by Adam Taggart who drives towards goal and slots home. The Mariners will have a long way back to pick up three points today. 

Central Coast look to mount a fight back in the 21st minute as more possession leads to a brighter spell. Perth hold firm and push the home side back into their own half. 

Perth are back on the attack, 23 minutes played and Central Coast look lost for answers.

Taggart comes close to his second and Perth’s third as he nails the cross bar. 7 shots inside the opening 25 minutes for the visitors. 

The Mariners turn to the acrobatic as Lavale tries an overhead kick in the 28th minute. His effort is blocked by his own player and the Glory got the ball away. The start of a brighter spell for the home side. 

The Mariners look to counter attack with Brandtman carrying ball to the edge of the Glory’s 18-yard box and is fouled. 

Goal for Central Coast! Auglah stands over the free kick and curls it into the top corner. No chance for the keeper. The Mariners are back in the game. 

Central Coast Mariners are on the front foot and close the first half the better of the two teams. A positive way to head into half time. 

Hot start for Central Coast in the second half! A good ball into the box worries the Perth defence and leads to a corner which is cleared by the Glory. 

Perth go straight up the other end in the 47th minute and rattle the crossbar for the second time in the game. A fast start to the second half. 

The game really opened up and the Mariners won a corner which needed to be cleared after a clever flick into the 6-yard box. 

The Mariners look to find the equaliser in the 60th minute. Nice team play get Ngor free but his shot is blocked and the chance gone. 

Positive signs continue for the home side, a long throw in to Lavale is inches away from being poked home. He’s been a great outlet for the Mariners so far today. 

Goal for the Mariners! A deep ball into the box is headed home by Brandtman at the far post! 66-minutes played it’s game on! 

Central Coast Mariners continue their hunt for the lead. The side look a different outfit to the one at the start of the first half. 

A couple of chances for Perth Glory in the 78th minute which Mariners do well to keep out. The crossbar to the rescue after a deflection and Redmayne tipping it over the bar. Still 2-2. 

Colakovski brought a good save from Redmayne as he curled one with the outside of the boot. 

The best chance for the winner went the way of the Mariners as it breaks 2-on-1 but Perth get back to snuff out the attack. 

A corner in the last minute of the game for Central Coast is cleared by Perth Glory and the referee blows their whistle. 

We go again on Friday 10 April in a big game for finals football at the Polytec Stadium.
