With the Mariners having secured their place in next Sunday-s Grand Final qualifier courtesy of their second place finish in the 2012/13 Hyundai A-League regular season, the big question leading into this weekend was which team the Mariners would meet in the penultimate game of the season.
In a dramatic match in Melbourne on Friday, Victory (2-1) – who finished third in the regular season – booked their ticket to Gosford courtesy of Qantas Socceroos striker Archie Thompson. Thompson netted the winning goal four minutes into extra time.
Victory and Glory had finished the first 90 minutes of their Hyundai A-League Finals Series match level at 1-1, with Ryo Nagai (Glory) and Mark Milligan (Victory) scoring for their respective teams.
The Mariners will depart Australia bound for China on Sunday where they will play Guizhou Renhe on AFC Champions League Matchday 4. The team will then return to tackle Victory, a side they have largely performed well against this campaign.
Mariners met Victory three times throughout the regular season, twice away and once at home.
In their two away fixtures against Postecoglou-s team, the sides battled out entertaining draws.
Meanwhile, in their only home clash this term, the Mariners managed a 6-2 triumph at Gosford-s idyllic bayside arena. That night, Michael McGlinchey claimed a hat trick, Mitchell Duke a brace, while substitute Nick Fitzgerald-s fine strike etched his name on the scoresheet.
